Hunting Requests

START

Pick up the first Hunting Request poster from the bulletin board in the Valentine train station, first available during Chapter II.

HUNTING REQUEST #1

RDR2-hunt-rabbit1.webp

RABBIT. Varmint Rifle. Found everywhere, woods and plains alike. A good place for them in Chapter II is the areas around the Horseshoe Overlook camp, including the woods and the downward slope to the Dakota River. A small-game arrow to the head may kill a rabbit in one hit, but it's unlikely. A regular arrow will damage it too much.

RDR2-hunt-rabbit2.jpg
RDR2-hunt-squirrel1.webp

SQUIRREL. Small-Game Arrow. Found in all wooded areas. A good place for them in Chapter II is the woods surrounding Horseshoe Overlook. Only take a shot with a fully drawn bow string, preferably with Dead Eye. You can get a clean kill with a Varmint rifle, too, but only if you have the Buck Antler Trinket. There are three species, any of which is fine for the request: Black Squirrel, American Red Squirrel, and Western Gray Squirrel.

RDR2-hunt-squirrel2.jpg

HUNTING REQUEST #2

RDR2-hunt-cardinal1.webp

CARDINAL. Small-Game Arrow. The most common of the annoying small birds. It's mostly found along the Dakota River, ranging from Bard's Crossing to Painted Sky. Birds are best shot when they're on the ground, like on rocks and bridges: check out the bird hotspots guide below. You can get a clean kill with a Varmint rifle, too, but only if you already have the Buck Antler Trinket.

RDR2-hunt-cardinal2.jpg
RDR2-hunt-rat1.webp

RAT. Small-Game Arrow. Found in caves, in the slums of Saint Denis, and wherever there are corpses. Three reliable spawn points are the northern part of Bolger Glade in Lemoyne, Black Bone Forest in West Elizabeth, and Doyle's Tavern in Saint Denis during the rat infestation random encounters. You can get a clean kill with a Varmint rifle, too, but only if you have the Buck Antler Trinket. There are two species: Brown Rat and Black Rat.

RDR2-hunt-rat2.jpg
RDR2-hunt-woodpecker1.webp

WOODPECKER. Small-Game Arrow. Found in wooded areas, especially in New Hanover (Cumberland Forest) and in Roanoke Ridge, and also on the islands of Flat Iron Lake. Birds are best shot on the ground, like on rocks and bridges: check out the bird hotspots guide below. You can get a clean kill with a Varmint rifle, too, but only with the Buck Antler Trinket. There are two species: Pileated Woodpecker and Red-Bellied Woodpecker.

RDR2-hunt-woodpecker2.jpg

HUNTING REQUEST #3

RDR2-hunt-chipmunk1.webp

CHIPMUNK. Small-Game Arrow. Found in wooded areas all over the game world, and unlike squirrels these are quite rare and rarely come in three-star varieties. Two reliable spawn points are around Bacchus Station (New Hanover/Ambarino) and the area between Lone Mule Stead and Fort Riggs (West Elizabeth). You can get a clean kill with a Varmint rifle, too, but only if you have the Buck Antler Trinket.

RDR2-hunt-chipmunk2.jpg
RDR2-hunt-robin1.webp

ROBIN. Small-Game Arrow. Easily the most elusive of the small birds, despite having a very wide range and spanning four out of five states in the game world. The only reliable spawn points are the usual bird hotspots: check out the bird hotspots guide below. You can get a clean kill with a Varmint rifle, too, but only if you have the Buck Antler Trinket.

RDR2-hunt-robin2.webp
RDR2-hunt-oriole1.webp

ORIOLE. Small-Game Arrow. Found in wide open areas, especially Big Valley in West Elizabeth. Orioles often fly overhead near Hanging Dog Ranch. Birds are best shot on the ground, like on rocks and bridges: check out the bird hotspots guide below. You can get a clean kill with a Varmint rifle, too, but only if you already have the Buck Antler Trinket. There are two species: Baltimore Oriole and Hooded Oriole.

RDR2-hunt-oriole2.webp
RDR2-hunt-opossum1.webp

OPOSSUM. Varmint Rifle. Found only at night in The Heartlands/New Hanover and the northern part of West Elizabeth. Two reliable spawn points are Lone Mule Stead and the Black Bone Forest, both in West Elizabeth. A single shot of the Varmint may not instantly kill the possum, which is annoying, so wait until it literally plays possum before shooting. Do this one last, or the carcass will rot on your horse while you hunt the other animals.

RDR2-hunt-opossum2.jpg

HUNTING REQUEST #4

RDR2-hunt-songbird1.webp

SONGBIRD. Small-Game Arrow. Found pretty much everywhere, and especially on plains like Big Valley and The Heartlands. Birds are best shot on the ground, like on rocks and bridges: check out the bird hotspots guide below. You can get a clean kill with a Varmint rifle, too, but only if you already have the Buck Antler Trinket. There are two species:  the Western Tanager Songbird and the Scarlet Tanager Songbird.

RDR2-hunt-songbird2.jpg
RDR2-hunt-sparrow1.webp

SPARROW. There are three species: the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, the American Tree Sparrow, and the Golden Crowned Sparrow.

RDR2-hunt-sparrow2.jpg
RDR2-hunt-toad1.webp

TOAD. Small-Game Arrow. Found in swamps and along riverbeds anywhere, but especially in Bluewater Marsh and along the lower Dakota and upper Kamassa rivers. There are also many on the islands in Flat Iron Lake. You can get a clean kill with a Varmint rifle, too, but only if you already have the Buck Antler Trinket. Both species count: the Western Toad and the Sonoran Desert Toad (the latter only on the San Luis River in Rio Bravo, New Austin).

RDR2-hunt-toad2.jpg
RDR2-hunt-bullfrog1.webp

BULLFROG. Small-Game Arrow. Found in swamps, bogs, and marshes all over Lemoyne, and only there. Reliable spawn points are Eris Field, Ringneck Creek, and the Kamassa River around Lagras/Lakay north of Saint Denis. You can get a clean kill with a Varmint rifle, too, but only if you already have the Buck Antler Trinket.

RDR2-hunt-bullfrog2.jpg
RDR2-hunt-skunk1.webp

SKUNK. Varmint Rifle. Found in wooded areas pretty much anywhere, but only at dusk or night, and they're very rare to come in the three-star variety. A greatly reliable spawn point for skunks is in the Black Bone Forest in Big Valley, West Elizabeth, on the other side of the road from the Trapper and south of Pronghorn Ranch. Do this one last, or the carcass will rot on your horse while you hunt the other animals.

RDR2-hunt-skunk2.jpg

After mailing in these carcasses, you will receive a Letter from Ms. Dobbs informing you that she is traveling and there will be no more hunting requests for a while. The fifth request is received automatically in the mail when free-roam resumes during Epilogue I.

HUNTING REQUEST #5

RDR2-hunt-waxwing1.webp

CEDAR WAXWING. Small-Game Arrow. Despite what the map says, waxwings are found in many locations, although they're rarer than other birds. A highly reliable spawning point is the open plains south of Hanging Dog Ranch in Big Valley, West Elizabeth, plus of course the usual hotspots: check out the bird hotspots guide below. You can get a clean kill with a Varmint rifle, too, but only if you already have the Buck Antler Trinket.

RDR2-hunt-waxwing2.webp
RDR2-hunt-bat1.webp

BAT. Small-Game Arrow. Found only at night in The Heartlands/New Hanover and the northern part of West Elizabeth. There's a popular trick that one can use here. When you enter the cave behind the waterfall at Elysian Pool, 2-3 dead bats will fall dead at your feet. Also, the first time you enter the main cave at the end of the tunnel, there are 10-12 bats flying around. Bats also spawn the first time you visit Flattened Cabin in New Hanover.

RDR2-hunt-bat2.webp
RDR2-hunt-bluejay1.webp

BLUE JAY. Both species count: Baltimore Oriole and Hooded Oriole.

RDR2-hunt-bluejay2.webp
RDR2-hunt-crow1.webp

CROW. Small-Game Arrow. Easily the most elusive of the small birds, despite having a very wide range and technically spanning four out of five states in the game world. The only reliable spawn points are the usual bird hotspots: check out the bird hotspots guide below. You can get a clean kill with a Varmint rifle, too, but only if you have the Buck Antler Trinket.

RDR2-hunt-crow2.webp
RDR2-hunt-beaver1.webp

BEAVER. Varmint Rifle. Both species count: Baltimore Oriole and Hooded Oriole.

BIRD HUNTING HOTSPOTS

There are two locations where you can find pretty much any bird within one in-game day:

  • Kamassa River. Specifically, the bend just northwest of Annesburg where the Feral Man can also be found. The area between the ford and the large rocks at north is a veritable treasure trove. Birds typically spawn on top of the rocks along the shores.

  • Fort Brennand. Walk around the fort and birds will spawn continuously and fly out of the towers. It works less well when you're inside the fort, for some reason. If not enough birds are spanning, walk or ride off toward the river and ride right back.
