MAIN STORY AND STRANGERS MISSIONS

MAIN STORY MISSIONS: CHAPTER I

Outlaws from the West. Nothing.

Enter, Pursued by a Memory. Nothing.

The Aftermath of Genesis. Nothing.

Old Friends

  • Loot on the O'Driscoll corpses is about $12, plus various items and valuables.

Who the Hell Is Leviticus Cornwall?

  • About $10 from the guards. $25 in the desk drawer inside the private car.

  • Oil Company Letter and Mining Company Letter, both in the private car. Minor other loot.

Eastward Bound

  • You should arrive at Horseshoe Overlook with about $50, plus valuables worth around $70 that you should donate to camp, since you won't be able to fence them for quite a while. Additionally, the items you've looted so far that can be sold at the general store should be worth another $30 or so.

MAIN STORY MISSIONS: CHAPTER II

Before the first mission, or right after Americans at Rest, are your only chances to get the Charity Handbill from Thomas Downes' table near the Valentine stables. Save/reload until it spawns. It must be during the daytime.

Polite Society, Valentine Style

  • Spare the man to get Jimmy Brooks' Pen. It's worth $10 if you sell it, but it's a unique item that is otherwise missable.

Americans at Rest. Nothing.

Money Lending and Other Sins I-II-III

  • Millet. Just recover the debt.

  • Matthews. Just recover the debt from the tree after following Chick Matthews' Map.

  • Wrobel. House: $10 and four jewelry. Barn: Horses Card #3 on a shelf and possibly a gold nugget in the horse's saddlebag. There's also a lockbox with minor loot under the gardening shelves in front of the house, along the right-hand wall.

    • After recovering the debt, leave the area, cross the river, and return to find the â€‹Antique Watch in the drawer of the nightstand just right of the front door. There will also be a rancher now, and he may be wearing a unique Cattleman Hat or Rodeo Hat.

      • Getting the watch is extremely tricky. While searching house, open the nightstand drawer by the front door to reveal the watch, but don't take it, or it'll disappear after the mission. And if you don't open the drawer now, the watch won't be there later. Also, there's a specific order to search the house to maximize your earnings: first the kitchen, then the nightstand (leave the watch), then the corner wardrobes, then both bedrooms, and finally the console table behind Wrobel. If you do the console table before you reach the necessary amount to repay the debt, it'll be empty. If you incapacitate or kill Wrobel when you return for the watch, you can loot him for cash. I've done this ten times and verified this is all true!

Exit, Pursued by a Bruised Ego

  • Sell the horse for $65. Receive the Legendary Animals Map from Hosea.

  • If you have the Preorder, Ultimate, or Special edition of the game, you can get up to two free horses from this stable.

  • If you stay in the area after the mission, it's easy to hunt the Legendary Bear, and a trapper stall is nearby to sell the pelt for $60. You can also ransack the Veteran's Homestead on the lake for $15 plus loot.

The First Shall Be Last

  • Unlocks Sean and throwable Tomahawks.

  • $10 in a tin in the bounty hunters' camp.

  • This is an easy chance to get the Weapons Expert #2 Challenge. Kill the first two bounty hunters yourself, without waiting for Javier, and for the third one just knife one more bounty hunter during the uphill climb.

The Spines of America

  • Unlocks Seamus, the fence in Emerald Ranch. Choose to wait for night and to do the house instead of the barn.

    • The first time I could fence my valuables, they were worth about $230, although I'd already found two large jewelry bags. How much you get depends on when you do this, how much you've been looting off corpses, and how much you've donated to camp.

  • Carmody Dell. Rob the downstairs bedroom, the chimney by the stairs, and the chest at the foot of the bed upstairs. Threaten Bob Crawford until he reveals the secret stash: it may be under his bed or in his son's bedroom downstairs (even if you already searched it, a new location will be activated now with the stash). You keep up to $330 of what you robbed, plus your share of the heist is $82.

Paying a Social Call

  • Unlocks Kieran.

  • Cabin: $40 on the table. Your share of the money in the chimney: $100. Get the Double-Barreled Shotgun from above the fireplace. Gunslingers Card #2 is on the blue wagon just outside of camp.

  • The first three O'Driscolls are easy targets to use to get the Weapons Expert #2 Challenge.

Who Is Not without Sin. Nothing.

  • This is an easy chance to get the Gambler #1 Challenge. Just go all-in whenever you have any hand, even just a pair.

  • After you return Swanson to camp, two strangers missions unlock at or near Flatneck Station: All That Glitters (treasure map) and Smoking and Other Hobbies (cigarette cards). See the Strangers Missions section just below this one.

We Loved Once and True I-II-III

  • These missions are missable if you don't do them now. III is missable if you decline helping Mary at the end of II.

A Quiet Time. Nothing.

Blessed Are the Meek?

  • Receive the Off-Hand Holster from Micah. West Elizabeth bounty: -$60 at least, but it may be a lot more and I've never been able to find out what it depends on: once it was over $300 for me...

Pouring Forth Oil I-II-III-IV

  • Part II is missable if not done within 1-2 days of Part I: John will get the wagon instead.

    • The wagon in Valentine is easier to steal, but the one at Cornwall Kerosene & Tar is closer to the drop-off point. To do the latter, jump over the fence, slit the guard's throat or wait for him to walk away, and drive off into the tunnel at left. They won't chase.

  • Train robbery. Be sure to "double-rob" every passenger: after John robs them, select each passenger and hit "Rob" to get even more money and valuables from everyone. In the back wagons are $20 in cash and 5-6 jewelry, including a small jewelry bag in the chest. You have to be quick and not leave the wagon, or it will trigger the next cutscene.

  • Your share: $200. Lemoyne bounty: -$50 (at least, but if you shoot any lawmen during the final escape it may be a lot more).

  • Part IV unlocks the Dead Eye manual marking ability.

A Fisher of Men

An American Pastoral Scene

  • Loot bodies for many items and valuables. Your share: $300. Receive the Lancaster Repeater from Micah.

  • Afterward, return to Micah's camp to find the Blackwater Ledger Scrap, the Micah Newspaper Scrap, and the Dutch Wanted Poster.

  • One of the stagecoach guards may be wearing the Cattleman Gambler's Hat or the Cattleman Hat.

  • One of the O'Driscolls by the river may be wearing the Liberty Hat, and it may not glow, so try them all on.

The Sheep and the Goats

  • Receive the Rolling Block Rifle from John. New Hanover Bounty: -$60.

  • One of Cornwall's men outside Keane's Saloon is wearing the Newsboy Flat Cap: pick it up during the fight.

A Strange Kindness

  • Receive a gold ingot from the German.

STRANGERS MISSIONS IN THIS AREA

Good, Honest, Snake Oil

  • Benedict Allbright bounty: $50. Also unlocks the Ellie Anne Swan bounty: $25.

  • When you return either bounty, you can get the unique Jail Ledger from Sheriff Malloy's table using the photo mode glitch.

Smoking and Other Hobbies

All That Glitters

  • Near Flatneck Station, on the ledge right of the bridge overlooking the river, you can buy or steal the Jack Hall Gang Map #1 from Máximo Cristóbal Valdespino, the treasure hunter. See my Treasure Maps Guide.

A Test of Faith

  • Meet Deborah MacGuinness in the Heartlands and begin collecting the 30 dinosaur bones. See the Collectibles section.

  • After mailing any 15 dinosaur bone locations, you will receive the Skull Statue in the mail.

A Fisher of Fish

  • Meet Jeremy Gill at Gill Landing, on the northern shore of Flat Iron Lake near the Lemoyne border. Starting in Chapter III, you can begin collecting the 15 Legendary Fish, for which you need special bait purchased in Lagras. See the Collectibles section. Since some of the Legendary Fish are in the state of New Austin, this mission is only completable during the Epilogue.

  • Gill's hut can be looted before triggering the mission, but it's locked for a time afterward. Inside is some loot and the Fauna Card #7.

  • While his Fisherman's Hat is typically only obtainable in the Epilogue after catching all Legendary Fish, there is a way to obtain it right now. Before triggering the mission, toss a dynamite stick on the dock where Mr. Gill is fishing. Once he's dead, pick up the hat. He will respawn, and so will the mission, as soon as you walk away, but you get to keep the hat!

The Noblest of Men, and a Woman

  • Receive the photographs from Theodore Levin in Keane's Saloon in Valentine: Black Belle Photograph, Billy Midnight's Photograph, Emmett Granger's Photograph, and Flaco Hernandez's Photograph.

    • Black Belle. A ton of loot from bounty hunters. Champions Card #4 under the shack and Gunslingers Card #10 inside the shack.

    • MidnightMidnight's Pistol near his body.

    • Granger. Granger's Revolver near his body. Harmonica item request for Sadie inside the house.

    • HernandezFlaco's Revolver near his body. High Stakes Map #1 inside the cabin. See my Treasure Maps Guide.

  • The next part of this mission will unlock during Chapter IV.

Wildlife Art Exhibition I-IV  (A Better World, A New Friend)

  • The first Hunting Request poster to start this mission is on the bulletin board in the Valentine train station.

  • See my Hunting Guide for more details on where and how to hunt every animal in the game.

  • The rewards are $50, $75, $100, and $120. Part V only becomes available during the Epilogue.

  • Upon completion of IV, you will receive a Letter from Ms. Hobbs in the mail.

  • Hunting Request posters disappear when mailing carcasses, so they are not unique items. If you re-add them via a trainer, the hunting missions will restart, so don't do it.

American Dreams

  • Find the three serial killer clues at the crime scenes:

    • First killer clue: under the short railroad bridge between Valentine and Horseshoe Overlook.

    • Second killer clue: on the large tree just off the road leading out of Bolger Glade, by the "S" in "Meadows."

    • Third killer clue: on the large rock southeast of Wallace Station, just across the creek near the railroad tracks.

      • There are several vultures at each location: if you kill and pluck them all, that's about $25 worth in rare vulture feathers.

    • When you've found all three clues, you'll get the Pieced Together Map.

  • Go to the new marker at Lucky's Cabin (near Downes Ranch) and inspect the basement. Get the Letter to the Editor and the Letter to Edmund from MotherAnother item, Lowry's Revolver, is only available to GTA Online players, so I don't consider it here.

  • Kill Lowry when he attacks Sheriff Malloy and get $20 as a reward.

These camp item requests may be received and completed any time between Chapters II and IV. Requests that are specific to Chapters III and IV are listed under those pages.

  • reward: Vaquero Riding Spurs (unique version)

LENNY

  • when: sharing his grandfather's story at the campfire, during the night

  • what: Pocket Watch (mission-specific item, not just any pocket watch)

  • where: Vetter's Echo cabin in Big Valley

  • reward: â€‹â€‹dynamite

The Lenny request is notoriously difficult to trigger, because there are dozens of possible campfire interactions. Lenny himself has a few. This request triggers when he talks about his grandfather's life as an enslaved person. Save/reload, watch a conversation fold out entirely, and save/reload again until you get the right one. I've had the best luck getting this to trigger at Shady Belle, during Chapter IV.

The Dutch request is best triggered during Chapter II, when he's almost always at camp, while in Chapters III-IV he's often gone. There's also a known glitch when you cannot give him the Pipe after collecting it: keep trying after every interaction you have with him, even during missions, and eventually the option will come up.

CAMP ACTIVITIES UNIQUE TO THIS CHAPTER

  • Five Finger Fillet with Lenny. Nothing.

  • Hunting with Charles. The lockbox at the poachers' camp has the Poison Throwing Knife Pamphlet. One of th epoachers may be wearing the unique/missable Bag Hat*. Give Pearson the bison pelt.

  • "Counseling" with Mary-Beth or Karen. Honor reward.

  • Home Robbery with Javier (Chez Porter)

    • Your share of the heist: $175, plus the following loot: $150 and a large jewelry bag on barn second floor, $10 and the Gunslingers Card #3 in the cabin, and the Pump Action Shotgun in the loft of one of the bedrooms in the house.

    • There are four horses here, and out of eight saddle bags I found three gold nuggets, but these are random drops so YMMV.

    • There's a row of useful Alaskan Ginseng plants in the garden.

    • The barn second-floor loot respawns in the Epilogue.

LEGEND OF THE EAST SATCHEL

  • This should be done ASAP. The camp ledger unlocks after returning the first debt in Money Lending and Other Sins.

  • Several satchels and upgrades must be purchased first:

    • Buy the Leather Working Tools ($120) for Pearson from the ledger.

    • Tonics Satchel. To unlock: upgrade medicine wagon twice ($64 total). To purchase: deer, buck, elk.

    • Ingredients Satchel. To unlock: donate 5 animal carcasses. To purchase: deer, badger, squirrel.

    • Kit Satchel. To unlock: donate 3 valuables to the tithing box. To purchase: deer, elk, panther.

    • Provisions Satchel. To unlock: upgrade provisions wagon twice ($60 total). To purchase: deer, bison, raccoon.

    • Materials Satchel. To unlock: craft 3 recipes at the scout fire. To purchase: deer, boar, iguana.

    • Valuables Satchel. To unlock: donate $50 to the tithing box. To purchase: deer, beaver, rabbit.

    • Legend of the East Satchel. To unlock: craft all other satchels. To purchase: deer, cougar, wolf.

  • Money: $300. Pelts: 7 deer, 2 elk, 1 badger, beaver, bison, boar, buck, cougar, iguana, rabbit, raccoon, squirrel, panther, wolf.

  • A super easy way to finance these upgrades is to get the gold bar from the burnt-down sheriff's office in Limpany, which is just west of Horseshoe Overlook. Even if you haven't unlocked the fences yet, you can donate the gold bar to camp for its full value.

  • See my Hunting Guide for more details on where to hunt these animals. Here's the short version:

    • Deer, buck, squirrel, rabbit. Everywhere.

    • Badger. In the Heartlands at night, but it's very rare. Another possible area is south of Fort Riggs and near Lone Mule Stead.

    • Beaver. Along the shores of Owanjila Lake or along the Kamassa River, in the swamp near Butcher Creek.

    • Bison. In the Heartlands, typically near Emerald Ranch and the Overflow; or use the one from the Charles hunting mission.

    • Boar. Many places. Easiest near Ringneck Creek south of Emerald Ranch, or in the woods north of Owanjila Lake.

    • Cougar. At night along train tracks connecting Annesburg to Bacchus Station, or in the woods north of Owanjila Lake.

    • Elk. Many places. A reliable spot is Big Valley, west of Wallace Station, which is full of pronghorn, elk, deer, buck, etc.

    • Iguana. Only on the large island in the middle of Flat Iron Lake. Cross on horseback at the narrowest spot, near Clemens Point.

    • Panther. At night only in the woods of Catfish Jackson's, in southern Lemoyne. Take a train to Rhodes and ride straight south.

    • Raccoon. At night pretty much anywhere. A reliable spot is in the woods north of Owanjila Lake, near the trapper's stall.

    • Wolf. At night anywhere. A reliable spot is north of Hanging Dog Ranch in Big Valley, or use the wolf attack random encounter.

  • You can do all the hunting required for the LOTE satchel in well under two hours. I recommend spending 30-45 minutes in Big Valley and the woods north of Owanjila Lake, where nearly all of these animals can be found. There are also wild horses to tame here for extra carrying capacity for the bigger pelts. The Legendary Buck is here, too, which makes it easy to get the Buck Antler Trinket.

  • The three deer from the Master Hunter #1 challenge and one of the rabbits from the Horseman #1 challenge can be used for this, too.

  • The three recipes at the scout fire can be three of the same recipe. The scout fire is behind the wagons.

UNIQUES, VALUABLES, CHALLENGES, COLLECTIBLES

UNIQUE ITEMS IN THIS AREA

A red star * after an item's name indicate that it is missable; i.e., that there is only a specific window of opportunity to grab it. This also applies to items that will be removed from the inventory by making certain choices, such as camp item request items.

WEAPONS AND CLOTHES

  • Bag Hat*. Extremely rare random drop. May be on a poacher during the "Go hunting with Charles" camp activity.

  • Bucket Hat*. On a random Appleseed Timber Company worker during the related random encounter.

  • Cattleman Hat*. May be on a rancher after Money Lending and Other Sins. Return to Painted Sky after recovering Wrobel's debt.

  • Fisherman's Hat. While this is typically only obtainable in the Epilogue after catching all Legendary Fish, there is a way to obtain it right now. Visit Gill Landing, the shack on the northern shore of Flat Iron Lake and at the southernmost end of The Heartlands, near the Lemoyne border. Instead of triggering the Strangers mission A Fisher of Fish, toss a dynamite stick on the dock where Mr. Gill is fishing. Once he's dead, pick up the hat. He will respawn, and so will the mission, as soon as you walk away, but you keep the hat!

  • Granger's Revolver*. Obtained from Emmett Granger's body during the Strangers mission The Noblest of Men, and a Woman.

  • Newsboy Flat Cap*. From a Cornwall guard, only during the shootout in the main story mission The Sheep and the Goats.

  • Scarecrow Hat*. Shoot it off the scarecrow at Guthrie Farm, just below "A" in "Hanover." Artists Card #11 is on the bed in the house.

  • Scout Jacket* (unique version). Reward for completing Pearson's first camp item request.

  • Vaquero Riding Spurs* (unique version). Reward for completing Dutch's camp item request.

  • For detailed treasure information, see my Treasure Maps Guide. Chapter guides only contain the location of specific maps.

  • Chick Matthews' Map. Obtained while recovering Matthews' debt during the main story mission Money Lending and Other Sins.

  • High Stakes Map #1. Obtained from a treasure hunter during this random encounter. There are several possible spawn points for this encounter, all in West Elizabeth between Wallace Station and Riggs Station, on high rises between the train tracks and the Dakota River. I have often found this near the writing "Diablo Ridge" on the map.

  • High Stakes Map #2. Behind the Cumberland Falls waterfall, right under "F" in "Falls." Cross over on the log to reach the location.

    • To get this, you have to have gotten map #1 already, and although it's just across the Dakota River from here, technically it's in West Elizabeth, so I also included it in my Epilogue I guide.

  • Jack Hall Gang Map #1. Obtained from the treasure hunter during the Strangers mission All That Glitters.

  • Jack Hall Gang Map #2. Go to Caliban's Seat, ride to the top, and hang right just before getting to the makeshift camp. Drop down at left and shimmy along the cliffside until you reach a hole in the wall, which contains this map and some jewelry.

  • Le Tresor des Morts Map #1. Obtained from the burned-out jailhouse in Limpany, the ghost town near Horseshoe Overlook.

  • Legendary Animals Map. Obtained from Hosea during the main story mission Exit, Pursued by a Bruised Ego.

  • Liberty Hat*. West Elizabeth. May be on an O'Driscoll during the main story mission An American Pastoral Scene.

  • Naval Compass*. Lemoyne. In the Braithwaite Manor boathouse. Fulfills Pearson's second camp item request, or can be kept.

    • Pearson's request can also be fulfilled with another naval compass, obtainable during the Chapter IV Strangers mission Fatherhood and Other Dreams II. If the first compass is given to Pearson and the second one isn't picked up, it's missable.

  • Otis Miller and the Arabian Prince. West Elizabeth. Clawson's Rest, the cabin north of Valentine just across the Dakota River. It's one of three options to fulfill Jack's first camp item request, or it can be kept. It also respawns in the Epilogue, so it's not missable.

  • Pieced Together Map. Obtained after recovering the three serial killer map clues, which are in three different states:

    • First killer clue. New Hanover. Under the short railroad bridge between Valentine and Horseshoe Overlook.

    • Second killer clue. Lemoyne. On the large tree just off the road leading out of Bolger Glade, by the "S" in "Meadows."

    • Third killer clue. West Elizabeth. On the large rock southeast of Wallace Station, just across the creek near the railroad tracks.

  • Pipe*. West Elizabeth. In Vetter's Echo, the shack south of Little Creek River. Fulfills Dutch's camp item request, or can be kept.

  • Pocket Watch*. West Elizabeth. Inside Vetter's Echo, the shack south of Little Creek River. Fulfills Lenny's second camp item request, or can be kept. If picked up before getting his request, it'll appear simply as a "Silver Pocket Watch."

  • The Case of the Shrew in the Fog*. Lemoyne. Inside the house at Hagen Orchards, north of Saint Denis. Fulfills Hosea's first camp item request, or can be kept.

Crouch and walk up the slope on the overhang above the Rock Carving. Turn the corner. Drop down to the ledge below. Turn around and drop down again. Hug the left wall. CHALLENGES EASILY DOABLE NOW

BANDIT

  • #1. Hold up 5 townsfolk. This easily done at night behind the Valentine saloon and Sheriff's office, ironically.

    • NB: held up train passengers and horse riders in the wilderness do not count: these holdups have to be done within town limits

EXPLORER

  • #1. Find a treasure map. Closest ones are "Le Tresor des Morts" map in Limpany or the "Jack Hall Gang" map near Flatneck Station.

  • #2-10. A new one unlocks every time you find the next map. Jack Hall Gang Map 2 is the only other one in this area. Chick's Treasure Map from Money Lending and Other Sins doesn't count.

HERBALIST

  • #1. Pick 6 yarrow. Found anywhere, but abundant around Emerald Ranch, near Flatneck Station, and in Cumberland Forest.

  • #2. Pick and eat four species of berries. Three are easily done now, but one is out of the way.

    • raspberries: anywhere in the Heartlands

    • wintergreen berries: in Cumberland Forest, just north of Valentine

    • blackberries: mostly in Big Valley, and the only one in New Hanover is south of Downes Ranch, along the Dakota River bank

    • evergreen huckleberries: near Butcher's Creek in Roanoke Ridge, or south of Caliga Hall in Lemoyne.

HORSEMAN

  • #1. Kill 5 rabbits from horseback. The two from Exit, Pursued by an Ego are easy, plus there's many around camp.

  • #2. Jump 3 obstacles in 15 seconds. An easy spot to do this is the downhill slope toward the Dakota River just north of camp.

GAMBLER

  • #1. Win 5 hands of poker. Just go all in whenever you have any hand, even only a pair.

MASTER HUNTER

  • #1. Skin 3 deer. The first is in Colter, and it's easy to get the other two near Valentine, around camp, and in the Heartlands.

  • #2. Get 3 perfect rabbit pelts. Anywhere around camp. Easily combined with Horseman #1 and the Pearson item request

  • #3. Track 10 animal species with binoculars. Easily done from any elevated place in the Heartlands. Wild horses count, too.

  • #4. Get 5 clean animal kills after calling them. Anywhere in the Heartlands with deer or pronghorns. The "Call" function only works if the animal isn't spooked, so approach them slowly by horse or on foot.

SHARPSHOOTER

  • #1. Shoot 3 flying birds. Easily done around camp, or during the nearby shooting competition with the Mexican gunslinger.

  • #2. Shoot two different animal species in the same dead eye. Easily done pretty much anywhere. Tag both before shooting.

  • #3. Shoot 5 flying birds while on a moving train. Jump on a train as it departs a station and you can do this in 30 seconds.

  • #4. Kill an enemy with a tomahawk from 80+ feet away. Any O'Driscoll camp is perfect. Walk up with the tomahawk drawn until the aim marker turns red, which happens at around 90 feet. It must be a one-shot kill to count, so an Improved Tomahawk works best.

SURVIVALIST

  • #1. Catch 3 bluegill. Catch two easily during A Fisher of Men, then return to the same spot later for the third one. Use cheese bait.

  • #2. Hand 5 animals in to Pearson or the Trapper. Easily done anywhere and anytime. Fish count, too.

  • #3. Kill 5 animals with the Varmint Rifle. Easily done anywhere and anytime. So annoying that #2 and #3 aren't reversed...

WEAPONS EXPERT

  • #1. Kill 3 enemies with your knife. Anywhere is good for this; the mission The First Shall Be Last is a good time for it.

  • #2. Kill 3 enemies with throwing knives in 10 seconds. The first three O'Driscolls in Paying a Social Call are easy targets for this, as are the three O'Driscolls during the doctor's robbery in Valentine. Use Improved Knives or Poison Knives for one-shot kills

  • #3. Kill 3 birds of prey with a tomahawk. Crows, ravens, eagles, hawks, and owls. Easiest way to attract them is to kill a medium-large animal, like a deer, and just wait a minute for them to flock. Do this three times. They needn't be scavenging: they can be in flight or perched, too, but they're easier to get while they scavenge.

  • #4. Kill 10 enemies with shotgun crafted ammo. Buy the Incendiary Buckshot Pamphlet from the fence, or find it in the broken-down shack at Copperhead Landing in Roanoke Ridge, near the Lemoyne border. Craft the ammo with shotgun slugs and moonshine. Any shotgun works, even the sawed-off one. The targets must be active enemies, and you can't loot them because they're on fire, so this is best done during missions where you don't have time to loot anyway (e.g., the Cornwall guards during The Sheep and the Goats).

RANDOM ENCOUNTERS AND RECOMMENDED ACTIVITIES

Weapons to buy ASAP

  • Varmint Rifle ($72) and Springfield Rifle ($120) at the Valentine gunsmith for better hunting.

  • The Varmint Rifle is free if you have the Special, Ultimate, or Preorder Edition.

  • If you save an NPC from a snake bite near Flatneck Station, two days later he'll reward you with a free item from the gunsmith.

Trinket to get ASAP

  • Hunt the Legendary Buck in West Elizabeth and buy the Buck Antler Trinket from Seamus. This lets you get some perfect pelts even when you bungle a kill. This is quite useful to get perfect skins from land snakes, which are unreasonably hard to kill with a bow.

Valentine Doctor's Robbery

  • $20-30 in cash register. In the backroom, there's $50 and Schofield Revolver on the table. There's an additional $25 in the safe, which requires explosive ammo or a dynamite stick to open.

  • Here's how to do this cleanly and maximize your take:

    1. Point your weapon at the doctor and order him to open the backroom.

    2. While he walks over, rob the till.

    3. When the doctor has opened the backroom, incapacitate or kill him, then quickly loot him for a unique item: Letter to the doctor from Donal.

    4. Enter Dead Eye and eliminate the O'Driscolls and the prostitute quickly. It's best to use the Bow or Throwing Knives.

    5. Set the charge on the safe and run to the table to avoid the blast. Loot the money on the table and get the revolver.

    6. Get the safe money and run out the way you came, avoiding the sheriff and deputy or tackling them to the ground (but don't kill them or you'll get a big bounty).

    7. Done this way, the bounty should be around $2.50, but surely less than $5.

  • The three O'Driscolls here are easy targets to use for the Weapons Expert 2 challenge, best if using Improved or Poison Knives.

Appleseed Timber Company

  • In West Elizabeth, but just across the Dakota River from Valentine. Three stages, each at least a day apart.

  • A random worker is wearing a Bucket Hat*. Lasso him, ride away, steal the cap when you're far enough, and leave him there.

    • WARNING! If you do this after stage 3 is complete, you may only get one shot. If you die or fail and must reload, the entire camp may have disappeared, since the game considers the area finished.

  • In stage 3, one of the workers mauled by wolves carries a Letter from St. Luke's Academy*. The letter can also be looted from any other Appleseed worker you kill or incapacitate during previous stages.

Castor's Ridge Homestead

  • Four stages, each at least a day apart. A man and his sons are building their ranch and you can defend them from O'Driscolls.

  • If you lend them $100 in the third stage, they'll repay you $150 in the fourth.

Rescue Bill Williamson random encounter

  • This triggers some time between Chapters II-IV, but for me it always happens in Chapter II.

  • Nothing to obtain, except some loot from the bounty hunters.

Valentine Bounties

  • Benedict Allbright. $50 reward.

  • Ellie Anne Swan. $25 reward.
