MAIN STORY AND STRANGERS MISSIONS

MAIN STORY MISSIONS

A Fork in the Road. Nothing...

Icarus and Friends. Nothing.

Visiting Hours. Nothing.

Just a Social Call

  • Leviticus Cornwall's body can be looted from the water, but, disappointingly, there's nothing on him...

The Delights of Van Horn

  • Receive the Carcano Rifle from Bill at the beginning.

A Rage Unleashed

  • During the final conversation with Charles, choose to accept to help Rains Fall! Otherwise, you'll miss out on three entire missions.

Goodbye, Dear Friend

  • Unlocks the Critical Region Highlight Dead Eye ability. After the mission, receive Mary's Ring, the Goodbye Letter from Mary, and the Young Mary & Arthur Photograph.

Archaeology for Beginners

  • During the first part of the ride, agree to help Captain Monroe, or his side mission is missable.

  • During the second part of the ride, if you choose "Arthur's Son" as one of the dialogue options, it's the first and one of the only two times in the script that Arthur mentions Isaac.

  • To do the military camp nonlethally as Rains Fall requests, run from one soldier to another and lasso/hogtie them. You may need to use a health cure. Several of the soldiers have the Military Mountie Hat: it must be picked up quickly, or it de-spawns.

  • The chest in the camp has two jewelry, as do some of the horses hitched nearby. All this loot respawns later if you revisit the camp.

  • If you didn't kill anyone, receive the unique/missable Owl Feather Trinket from Rains Fall.

Honor, amongst Thieves. Nothing. This is the missable Captain Monroe mission where you have to steal the vaccine from the Army.

The Fine Art of Conversation

  • -$40 for Captain Monroe at the end. If Arthur has high honor, the cutscene is with Sister Calderón; otherwise, it's with Rev. Swanson. Both are very good, but the former is especially excellent writing and I recommend it.

  • The strangers mission Of Men and Angels is no longer available after this mission.

The Bridge to Nowhere

  • Train travel is no longer available after this mission.

Mrs. Sadie Adler, Widow I-II

  • No more O'Driscoll random encounters or itinerant camps are available after this mission: if you don't have 88% on this gang in the Compendium by now, there is no way to change that later!

  • Pick up the Litchfield Repeater from Sadie's camp at the start of II.

  • The last thug has the Letter to Tom from Colm. There's $100 in the lockbox and some jewelry. The money respawns every week or so.

  • To loot the many bodies in this area, wait out the lawmen that come investigate. The upstairs bedroom is a good place to hide. You can also wait by the front door, let a lawman walk in, and knife him in the back without the others noticing.

Money Lending and Other Sins VI-VII

  • In Part VI, one of the soldiers is carrying the Letter to Martin from Father.

  • In Part VII, -$60 if Arthur gives money to Mrs. Londonderry.

Three missions disappear right before or right after Favored Sons, so be sure to do them before: they are The Widow of Willard's Rest I-II-III, Strauss' mission Money Lending and Other Sins VI-VII, and Do Not Seek Absolution I-II. See the Strangers missions section below

Favored Sons. Nothing.

The King's Son. Almost every soldier at the fort has the Military Mountie Hat.

My Last Boy. $20 in the cupboard upstairs. Last chance for the Military Mountie Hat.

DO THE ABERDEEN PIG FARM RANDOM ENCOUNTER NOW! See details in the Random Encounters section below.

Our Best Selves. Nothing. Beginning this mission marks the point of no return.

Red Dead Redemption. Nothing...

STRANGERS MISSIONS IN THIS AREA

The Course of True Love IV-V

  • Receive A letter from Penelope at the start of IV and the unique/missable Penelope's Bracelet at the end of V (must choose "Accept").

Of Men and Angels I-II

  • Only available if Brothers and Sisters, One and All was completed during Chapter IV. -$10 if Arthur donates cash instead of food.

The Wisdom of the Elders I-V

  • In Part V, the direction toward the mine's entrance is indicated by the Trail Trees, starting from the bridge near the Trapper.

  • Inside the mine, after the explosion, get a gold nugget and the Miner's Hat from either of the dead miners (but this won't save to your inventory, unlike the one at Beryl's Mine in West Elizabeth).

  • At the end of Part V, get $50 and the Liability Agreement from the table. The Shaman is still running around Butcher's Creek, and can be kidnapped and looted, but this will result in the whole community attacking you.

The Widow of Willard's Rest I-IV

  • At the end of Part III, receive $100 and the Letter from Charlotte.

  • These missions are technically unnamed, in that a saved game doesn't bear their names upon completion.

Do Not Seek Absolution, I-II

  • In Part II, -$100 when Arthur gives money to Mrs. Downes.

The Smell of Grease Paint I-II. Nothing.

The Veteran I-VI. Becomes available now, but it's pretty much canon to do it in the Epilogue, so see the Epilogue I Chapter Guide.

RECOMMENDED NARRATIVE ORDER

Chapter VI is very long and convoluted, and it can be difficult to weave a coherent narrative. The following order is my preferred one to tell the story of Arthur's redemption in a high-honor play-through. Strangers missions are marked by *.

Spring John out of Sisika Penitentiary as soon as possible. Also helps Arthur get his mind off... things.

  • A Fork in the Road

  • Icarus and Friends

  • Visiting Hours

Dutch's great "plan" is put in motion on all three fronts: Cornwall, O'Driscoll, and Eagle Flies.

  • Just a Social Call

  • The Delights of Van Horn

  • A Rage Unleashed

  • Of Men and Angels I-II *

  • Goodbye, Dear Friend

Arthur ponders about love and life after the conversation with Sister Calderón and Mary's "dear john" letter.

  • The Course of True Love IV-V *

  • The Widow of Willard's Rest I-II-III *

Do as much of the Native American storyline consecutively as possible.

  • Archaeology for Beginners

  • Honor, amongst Thieves

  • The Fine Art of Conversation

After his experiences with Rains Fall, Arthur begins seriously planning for John's escape, as well as pondering his own fate and mortality. All these missions address this explicitly and are among the most introspective of all. Ideally, the Sister Calderón missions "Of Men and Angels I-II" should belong here, too, but alas it disappears after "The Fine Art of Conversation."

  • The Bridge to Nowhere

  • Mrs. Sadie Adler, Widow I-II

  • Do Not Seek Absolution I-II *

  • Money Lending and Other Sins VI-VII

These last five missions essentially tell one story in five chapters, so they are best done together.

  • Favored Sons

  • The King's Son

  • My Last Boy

  • (Aberdeen Pig Farm random encounter)

  • Our Best Selves

  • Red Dead Redemption

Other Strangers missions can be done at any time or left for the Epilogue, as they are inconsequential to the story.

CAMP ITEM REQUESTS, ACTIVITIES, AND UPGRADES

ITEM REQUESTS

There are no new item requests exclusive to Chapter VI. See the Chapter II Guide, the Chapter III Guide, and the Chapter IV Guide.

ACTIVITIES UNIQUE TO THIS CHAPTER

There are no camp activities in Chapter VI. The ledger is unavailable. Upgrades can still be bought from Pearson prior to Our Best Selves.

UNIQUES, VALUABLES, CHALLENGES, COLLECTIBLES

UNIQUE ITEMS IN THIS AREA

A red star * after an item's name indicate that it is missable; i.e., that there is only a specific window of opportunity to grab it. This also applies to items that will be removed from the inventory by making certain choices, such as camp item request items.

  • Experiment Notes 1-2-3-4. Four documents on the second floor of the abandoned house with the Manmade Mutant, just west of Van Horn. Climb up on top of the front porch and enter through the open window.

  • Homing Tomahawk Pamphlet. In a lockbox inside Flattened Cabin at Moonstone Pond: climb the fallen tree and enter via the roof.

  • Hopes for the Future*. Book obtained from Dr. MacIntosh in Annesburg. This random encounter does not spawn as long as Edith Downes' missions are still available, since they occupy the same area on the map.

    • This is missable if you kill Dr. MacIntosh.

  • Inventor's Note*. New Hanover. Briefly on a table in Doverhill, a few days after the Strangers mission A Bright Bouncing Boy II.
  • Inventor's Plan*. New Hanover. Briefly on a table in Doverhill, a few days after the Strangers mission A Bright Bouncing Boy II.

  • Note from the Sculptor. Shoot down the hanged corpse at the Face in Cliff (see the previous line) and loot the note from the body.

  • Panoramic Map. Found on two frozen bodies, at one of three possible locations in the Grizzlies:

    • just south of a 90-degree bend in the road leading from Colter to Adler Ranch;

    • on a downward slope southwest of "C" in "Cairn Lake," about halfway between the frozen lake and the road;

    • atop a cliff near Lake Isabella, just northwest of "A" in "Ambarino."

  • Otis Miller and the Arabian Prince. In Clawson's Rest, the cabin just north of the train tracks, slightly southeast of "T" in "Grizzlies West." Fulfills Jack's first camp item request, or can be kept. Respawns in the Epilogue, so it's not missable.

  • Otis Miller and the Black-Hearted Lady. In Osman Grove, the cabin near the New Hanover border exactly east of Emerald Ranch. Fulfills Jack's first camp item request, or can be kept. Respawns in the Epilogue, so it's not missable.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Ammolite Gem and Fluorite Gem. In a bird's nest on a low-hanging cliff in the Grizzlies East, between "IZ" in "Grizzlies." Approach on foot from the north and drop down. These are particularly difficult to get. Follow the path indicated by my screenshots below.

  • Ancient Arrowhead. Once you've found all the Dreamcatchers, the drawing in the journal will point to Elysian Pool. Go behind the waterfall and climb to the top and far-right of the largest main chamber. The arrowhead is in the eye of the cave painting.

  • Mary's Ring. Received at the end of the main story mission Goodbye, Dear Friend.

  • Meteorite #1. Inside the Meteor House, just south of the Abandoned Trading Post on the train tracks, west of the Brandywine Drop.

  • Meteorite #2. At the center of the large meteor crater, northwest of the Meteor House on the other side of the tracks, atop a hill.

  • Owl Feather Trinket*. Received at the end of the main story mission Archeology for Beginners. This is missable either if you skip this mission entirely (by telling Charles that you won't help Rains Fall at the end of A Rage Unleashed) or if you kill anyone during it.

  • Penelope's Bracelet*. Received at the end of the Strangers mission The Course of True Love V. While ths item is unmissable during the mission, the mission itself is missable if the letter from Penelope on your desk at camp isn't picked up before My Last Boy.

  • Pocket Mirror*. In Martha's Swain, between Three Sisters & New Hanover border. Fulfills Molly's camp item request, or can be kept.

  • Shark Tooth Trinket. In the lockbox near the half-sunken Lannahechee Shipwreck, on the far northeast side of the map.

  • Trinkets from Legendary Animals: see the Legendary Animals section under Collectibles just below.

VALUABLES IN THIS AREA

  • Abandoned Trading Post, along on the train tracks west of the Brandywine Drop, south of Doverhill. $15 under a floor plank.

  • Adler Ranch. In the burned-out ruins of the ranch (so, starting from Chapter II onward) is one item of jewelry.

  • Butcher's Creek. South of the town, by the dam and a derelict wagon. $20 and a large jewelry bag in a lockbox under the large log.

  • Chez Porter, west of Granite Pass. There's $175 and a large jewelry bag in a chest on the second floor of the barn. There's also $10 in the small house and miscellaneous loot in the big house. All of this respawns occasionally.

  • Dodd's Bluff Cabin, just south of "K" in "Window Rock." Gold nugget inside the cabin.

  • Elysian Pool. In the standalone chimney inside a wooden fence is gold nugget and a small jewelry bag.

  • Elysian Pool. Under the log bridge at the south end of the lake is a lockbox with $45, which respawns every now and then.

  • Wapiti Indian Reservation. Large jewelry bag in a lockbox under the small wooden bridge, just east of the second "N" in "Indian."

  • Witch's Cauldron. Miscellaneous loot and the "mysterious liquid" in the cauldron, just north of "N" in "Ambarino."

The Poisonous Trail Treasure

  • To get this, you must have found all previous Poisonous Trail MapsSee my Treasure Maps Guide.

  • Enter the cave behind the waterfall at Elysian Pool. Climb up, go forward, and drop down to the right into a narrow crevice. Crawl through an opening at the bottom. Go right at the first fork and get a large jewelry bag from a lockbox at the makeshift camp.

  • Resume from the other side of the camp and go right. When you reach the edge of the abyss, go left and run-jump to the ledge below you on the farthest left. Slide down to a pool of water, climb up on the left, and recover the treasure: four gold bars.

  • To return, climb back up from the right-hand side of the slope, then grab the ledge above you, turn around, and grab the ledge above you again. Go forward and you'll be back at the makeshift camp. From here, simply retrace your steps.

    • (Of course, you can simply blow yourself up with dynamite: you'll respawn near your horse by Elysian Pool).

The Jack Hall Gang Treasure

  • To get this, you must have found all previous Jack Hall Gang Maps. See my Treasure Maps Guide.

  • Swim or ride to the small island in the middle of the lake at O'Creagh's Run. The treasure, two gold bars, is under a rock on the mossy flat between the two parts of the island.

Reed Cottage Treasure (Sketched Map)

  • After finding the map in the chimney of Reed Cottage (see above), go to the ledge overlooking Elysian Pool, on the western side. Stand near the lone large tree and follow the map's direction: 20 steps forward and 5 to the right. The treasure, one gold ingot, is under a rock on the other side of the large boulder on the ground. For more details, see my Treasure Maps Guide.

Train Wreck Treasure

  • It's in the creek just southwest of Cotorra Springs and east of Granite Pass, at the foot of the railroad bridge and exactly at the border between Grizzlies East and Grizzlies West in the state of Ambarino. There's $40 and a large jewelry bag in the yellow train car lying on its side, and two gold bars in the vertical train car. For more details, see my Treasure Maps Guide.

CHALLENGES EASILY DOABLE NOW

GAMBLER

  • #6. Beat the Blackjack dealer in two locations. Rhodes and Van Horn. Being pushed by the dealer doesn't count.

  • #7. Win at Five Finger Fillet in three locations. Strawberry, Valentine, Van Horn. Straightforward: just win two rounds in a row.

  • #8. Win 3 hands of Blackjack in three hits or more. This is the most frustrating challenge in the entire game. It's all but impossible to win a hand after drawing three cards. Try if you get dealt low cards, certainly below 10, and ideally below 7-8, but even then it may take 20-30 attempts just for one win. Some players like to exit/reenter the blackjack game whenever they're dealt a high hand, but that only saves some time. If you're on PC, I recommend using the save editor to skip this awfully programmed "challenge."

  • #9. Win 3 games of Dominoes in a row. Same strategy as in Gambler #5: always leave yourself at least two moves on the board. "In a row" does not mean "without interrupting," but only "without losing." So, win a hand, quit Dominoes, save, reenter Dominoes, etc.

  • #10. Win 3 hands of Poker in a row. Same strategy as for Gambler #1: go all-in whenever you have any hand, and the other players are very likely to fold (especially in Valentine, in my experience).

MASTER HUNTER

  • #5. Kill and skin 3 black or grizzly bears. Black bears are common along the Kamassa River, from Lemoyne to Ambarino and through New Hanover, especially in the Annesburg region. There are also many in Big Valley/West Elizabeth. Grizzlies are common around O'Creagh's Run and the frozen Barrow Lagoon, both in Ambarino, and of course there are many in Big Valley/West Elizabeth.

  • #6. Kill and skin 5 cougars with your bow. The best spot for this is at night along the tracks from Annesburg to Doverhill: at least 2-3 cougars a night will spawn there. Just ride along the tracks and be patient. One improved arrow is enough for a clean kill.

  • #7. Lure and kill 1 herbivore and 1 predator. Pick any spot with a clear view. A good one is near Willard's Rest, where there's a large cliff overlooking the train tracks and the bridge on the river. Place predator bait on the tracks and get up on the cliff. Kill a predator, usually a fox or a coyote. Then do the same with herbivores; it'll probably be a deer or an elk. DO NOT lay down the two baits at the same time. Just do one after the other. Also, a lured animal doesn't need to be actively eating the bait for it to count.

  • #8. Catch 3 small fish without a fishing rod. Shooting fish is an easy way to do this. Alternatively, walk behind the Whinyard Strait waterfall at Granite Pass, just north of the train tracks. Dead fish fall on the ledge all the time, so just pick up three.

  • #9. Kill an opossum playing possum. All possums "play possum" within seconds of seeing them, so this is easy... provided you find a possum at all, since they're very elusive. The most reliable spawn area is Lone Mule Stead, in West Elizabeth just across the railroad from Riggs Station. The woods north of Annesburg and those north of Bacchus Station are also pretty good spots to find one.

  • #10. Kill the Legendary Panther "Giaguaro." Go to Lemoyne, between Bolger Glade and the river, west of Shady Belle. The first clue for this unique legendary animal is right on top of its crown on the map. The next two clues are very close to one another. The panther is extremely difficult to spot, and unlike regular panthers, this one will one-shot kill you every time. After finding the third clue, stay still and search the woods/bushes in front of you with your weapon drawn until you see it. One explosive round usually kills it.

HORSEMAN and WEAPONS EXPERT. Easier to complete during Epilogue I.

SHARPSHOOTER and SURVIVALIST. Easier to complete during Epilogue II.

RANDOM ENCOUNTERS AND RECOMMENDED ACTIVITIES

  • Aberdeen Pig Farm

    • This is the only known legal way to keep your money during the Epilogue. Go to the farm north of Rhodes and speak to the man on the front porch. Accept to stay for a meal and to drink when offered. After being robbed of all the money you have, return to the farm, kill the Aberdeens, and do NOT recover the money from behind the painting.

    • If you need cash to buy something before the last mission, there's $75 in the ground-floor room facing south, behind the fireplace. This is only accessible from outside, and only during this encounter.

    • Sell or convert everything that won't carry over to the Epilogue; see the list on top of the Epilogue I-II guide. For example:

      • make simple and potent bitters, cures, and tonics with herbs: these sell for many times the value of the herbs alone;

      • make ammo with feathers, fat, and liquor, none of which carry over, but the ammo does;

      • make simple and potent predator and herbivore baits, which carry over;

      • if you have bird carcasses, break them down first to get their feathers and then sell the feathers to the Trapper.

  • Feral Man. Just south of "R" in "Roanoke Valley," and near the Old Tomb, is the cave of the "wolfman." He can be seen running around naked around the bend in the Kamassa River north of "NNE" in "Annesburg." If you follow him to the cave, you can recover the Wild Man's Journal from atop a crate near his tent, inside the cave. Killing him incurs negative honor, but hogtieing him doesn't.

  • Trapped Hunter. A hunter has his leg trapped in a bear trap, just under "G" in "Ridge." If you save him, he will grant you a free item from the Annesburg gunsmith at least a day later.

  • Murfree Brood

    • Hanging Victims. Just like for the Nite Folk in Lemoyne, except you won't always be attacked when you shoot these down. From the first corpse you run across you can get the Murfree Brood Prisoner's Note.
