MAIN STORY MISSIONS AND STRANGERS MISSIONS

MAIN STORY MISSIONS

The Joys of Civilization. Nothing.

Angelo Bronte, a Man of Honor

  • Your share: $123. Each grave robber has about $20. Some can be looted again for valuables (but not cash) while evading the law.

  • Inside the mausoleum with the stained glass is the Marvels #7 card.

Money Lending and Other Sins V

  • Davison. Can be hogtied after he tries to stab Arthur. Just threaten Nate while he's still under the bed to make him reveal the stash.

    • In Nate's room is the Letter to Nate from Momma, the Horses #4 and Horses #12 cards, and some loot.

    • In the living room, above the mantelpiece, is a Double-Barreled Shotgun.

    • Outside the house, on the southern side, is a chest hidden in the wall with some money and loot.

  • This mission is missable if you already robbed Catfish Jackson's before and killed Nate or his father. If you did rob them but without killing them, then the mission is still available with different dialogue, although any loot you already took doesn't respawn.

No, No and Thrice, No

  • The first guard outside may have a Double-Barreled Shotgun. In the room where Tilly is kept are $15 and two jewelry. The Appaloosa horse you use to chase Foreman can be fenced for about $35. If you had previously looted Radley's House, the loot doesn't respawn.

The Gilded Cage

  • This mission has three unique and missable items:

    • Letter to Bronte from the Mayor. On Mayor Lemieux's desk, in his office.

    • Algernon's Business Card. Save Algernon from choking on a nut, at the refreshments table left of the balcony you start from.

    • Theatre Ticket. Obtain it from the gentlemen who are smoking cigars near the Mayor, on the right side near the fountain.

      • This ticket will be removed if you watch a movie with Mary in Fatherhood and Other Dreams II (so you should do her mission before this one or skip the optional theatre part); or if you catch a show at the Théâtre Râleur for 100% completion (so you should do it before this mission, or use the other theater in Saint Denis).

A Fine Night for Debauchery

  • Your share: $825. Get the Reutlinger Pocket Watch from the safe.

    • After the mission, you can buy the High Roller Revolver from the fence later ($75 regular, $67 high honor, $45 max honor).

    • After the mission, but before The Noblest of Men and a Woman III, you can return to the Grand Korrigan riverboat, use a glitch or a trainer to enter the pit boss' cabin, and get an Antique Brass Compass. While it isn't visible in your inventory, either under Kit or under Watches, somehow it's sellable to a general store for $75.

Fatherhood and Other Dreams I-II

  • In the back of the stagecoach is the Naval Compass, three jewelry, and $30. You can keep this compass for yourself if you already gave Pearson the other one for his request; the other one is in the Braithwaite Manor boathouse.

    • If you already have the other compass but haven't given it to Pearson yet, this one isn't lootable.

  • If you have the Theatre Ticket from The Gilded Cage, it will disappear when you enter the show and cannot be acquired again.

  • This mission is missable if you ignore the letter on your table. It will not be available after the end of Chapter IV.

American Fathers I-II

  • Your share: $137 at the end of II. There is apparently an antique watch on Foreman Danbury's desk, but it cannot be picked up.

Horsemen, Apocalypses. Nothing.

Urban Pleasures

  • Your share: $15.25 ("don't forget the quarter..."). Unlocks the continuous free fire Dead Eye ability.

  • Lemoyne state bounty: -$165.

Country Pursuits. Nothing.

Revenge Is a Dish Best Eaten

  • Downstairs, get the List of Accounts and the Telegram to Police Chief Lambert in Bronte's office on the right. Upstairs, get two jewelry in the wardrobe in the first bedroom at right. The guard in Bronte's bedroom carries a Mauser Pistol. You can also loot Bronte for $155.

  • Lemoyne state bounty: -$95. This, plus the bounty from Urban Pleasures, is a good opportunity to complete the Bandit #5 Challenge if you have not yet (it requires you to accrue a bounty of $250 in any one state).

Banking, the Old American Art. Nothing.

STRANGER MISSIONS IN THIS AREA

The Noblest of Men, and a Woman III-IV-V

  • Part III unlocks after completing A Fine Night of Debauchery in this chapter: receive the Slim Grant Photograph at the end.

  • Parts IV and V take place in and around Annesburg. At the end of Part V, collect Calloway's Revolver from near his body.

  • A few days after concluding Part V, receive $350 and a Letter from Theodore Levin in the mail.

Oh, Brother I-II-III

  • Part I unlocks at the start of Chapter IV and is found in Valentine, in front of the general store. No items or loot in any of the stages.

The Artist's Way I-IV

  • Get Charles Chatenay's Sketch in Part I and receive the Letter from Charles Chatenay a few days after completing Part IV.

A Bright Bouncing Boy I-II

  • Part II unlocks a few days after Part I: visit Doverhill at night, in the northernmost part of the map.

  • A few days after II, return to Doverhill and get the Electric Lantern, the Inventor's Note, and the Inventor's Plan. After you reenter Doverhill this time, it will be permanently locked, so these items are missable if you don't get them the first time you see them.

  • A few days after finding Prof. Dragic's body, you can run across his robot in the state of Ambarino, precisely at this location.

The Mercies of Knowledge I-VII

  • -$50 for the permit in Part III.

  • At the end of Part VII, loot Professor Bell's body for the Electric Chair Blueprint.

Idealism and Pragmatism for Beginners I-III

  • Part I unlocks after The Gilded Cage. Read the Invitation from Mayor Lemieux found on your desk at camp.

  • Part II unlocks after receiving the Second Invitation from Mayor Lemieux.

  • Part III. Get the book Farm Field and Falconry during the mission, then $15 and a Letter from the Mayor's Office at the end.

    • If you killed Jean-Marc, a few days later you can fish his arm out of the pond you dumped his body in: just stand on the opposite shore and use a swamp lure.

A Fine Night for It

  • This mission only unlocks after at least one Nite Folk random encounter. The reward from the Old Cajun at the end is a gold tooth.

    • Liberty Hat may spawn on the hogtied prisoner or on one of the Nite Folk during the final wave. If it's on the prisoner, it will be destroyed if he gets burned. To prevent this, shoot the Nite Folk from afar before they can toss a fire bottle on the prisoners.

Help a Brother Out

Brothers and Sisters, One and All

  • You can rob the fence's cash register for $25-30 after discovering the location of the captives.

  • After the encounter with Edith Downes, the quickest way to escape the law is to cross the market and exit behind the fence.

  • These two missions are missable if you don't do them both before the end of Chapter IV. Moreover, if you miss them, Of Men and Angels won't become available in Chapter VI, nor will a random encounter with Sister Calderón, also in Chapter VI.

"Fundraiser"

  • This is a random encounter, although it's marked by a "?" on the map. Speak to the lady collecting donations for veterans, behind the tailor's shop in Saint Denis. If you give her $20, Arthur Morgan's name will be on a plaque on the building during the Epilogue.

Duchesses and Other Animals

  • Unlocks after The Gilded Cage, whether or not you saved Algernon from choking at the party.

    • Part II, first request: 5 snowy egrets, 5 little egrets, 5 reddish egrets, 15 lady of the night orchids. Reward: $100.

    • Part III, second request: 20 heron plumes, 7 lady slipper orchids, 10 moccasin orchids. Reward: $125.

    • Part IV, third request: 25 gator eggs, 3 Acuna's star orchids, 7 cigar orchids, 5 ghost orchids. Reward: $150.

    • Part V, fourth request: 30 spoonbill plumes, 10 rat tail orchids, 5 spider orchids, 5 night scented orchids. Reward: $175.

    • Part VI, fifth request: 10 sparrow egg orchids, 5 clamshell orchids, 5 queen's orchids, 5 dragon's mouth orchids. Reward: $200.

  • At the end of Part VI, receive two unique items: the Exotic Hat and Algernon's Revolver.

  • See my Hunting Guide for information about where to locate all exotics. They're found all over the map, so most players are likely to finish Algernon's requests in Chapter VI or even in the Epilogue (when the requests are still available from where you left off).

CAMP REQUESTS, ACTIVITIES, UPGRADES

ITEM REQUESTS

There are no new item requests exclusive to Chapter IV. See the Chapter II Guide and the Chapter III Guide for details about any requests that you might still have open by this time. Usually, Lenny's request triggers most easily during Chapter IV, at night around the campfire.

All outstanding requests must be fulfilled before the main story mission "Banking, the Old American Art." None are available after that.

ACTIVITIES UNIQUE TO THIS CHAPTER

  • Stagecoach Robbery with Lenny. Your share: $25.

  • Stagecoach Robbery with Micah and Bill. Your share: $50.

  • Bank Robbery with Charles. Your share: $137. Only with Special or Ultimate edition, and has a name: High and Low Finance.

  • Go Hunting with Pearson. Good opportunity to find gator eggs collectibles. I found 11, and Pearson only takes 1.

  • Go Rustling with Uncle. Your share: $50. There's 12 in cash inside the ranch, and the rancher may be wearing a Rodeo Hat. However, spending too long looting the ranch may result in mission failure.

UNIQUES, VALUABLES, CHALLENGES, COLLECTIBLES

UNIQUE ITEMS IN THIS AREA

A red star * after an item's name indicate that it is missable; i.e., that there is only a specific window of opportunity to grab it. This also applies to items that will be removed from the inventory by making certain choices, such as camp item request items.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Antique Brass Compass*. After the main story mission A Fine Night of Debauchery, but before the Strangers mission The Noblest of Men and a Woman III, you can return to the Grand Korrigan riverboat, use a glitch or a trainer to enter the pit boss' cabin, and get this item. While it isn't visible in your inventory, either under Kit or under Watches, somehow it's sellable to a general store for $75.

  • Naval Compass*. In the back of the stagecoach in the Strangers mission Fatherhood and Other Dreams II. Fulfills Pearson's second camp item request, or can be kept if you fulfilled it with the other naval compass found in the Braithwaite Manor boathouse.

Le Tresor des Morts Treasure

  • To get this, you must have found both previous Le Tresor des Morts maps/clues. See my Treasure Maps Guide.

  • Saint Denis. Inside the Lemieux family mausoleum with the stained glass in the northwestern part of the cemetery: six gold bars!

CHALLENGES EASILY DOABLE NOW

BANDIT

  • #7. Rob $50 from townsfolk and travelers. You can do this in one train robbery, or camp out on the side of the road and wait.

  • #8. Steal and fence 7 wagons. There's plenty around Emerald Ranch; just make sure to stop/kill witnessed and to not be Wanted.

  • #9. Hogtie someone and leave them on the railroad 3 times. The silliest challenge ever! Just get three passers-by literally anywhere.

  • #10. Complete 10 train robberies without dying or getting caught. Also super easy: you just have to point the gun, rob one passenger, and leave, and it counts!

GAMBLER

  • #4. Bust out a poker player in each location. This must be done in order: first Flatneck Station, then Saint Denis, and then Valentine. A strategy is to only play a hand when it's you and the poorest player at the table. Go all-in to take as much of his cash as possible.

  • #5. Win 3 rounds of dominoes without drawing any tiles. Extremely frustrating and time-consuming, and there is no strategy except the usual one to win at dominoes: whenever possible, make sure that both ends of the chain on the table have a tile that's already in your possession, which minimizes the chances of having to draw a new one...

HERBALIST

  • #7. Craft and use 5 special miracle tonics. The Special Miracle Tonic Pamphlet is in a lockbox on a ledge overlooking Big Valley, at this location. Then you need a huge amount of herbs.

    • 30 yarrow. Found anywhere, but especially in The Heartlands and in northern Lemoyne. Check out this video by Arbuckle.

    • 30 burdock root. Found anywhere along rivers. Take a stroll along the Dakota from Bard's Crossing to Cumberland Falls.

    • 30 currant. Found in the mountains of Roanoke Ridge. There's a ton just north of "S" in "Annesburg" and also near Beaver Hollow.

  • #8. Craft 6 poison weapons with oleander. Either poison arrow or poison knives. Oleander is everywhere along the Lannahechee.

HORSEMAN

  • #6. Strawberry to Saint Denis 9-minute dry dash. To avoid touching water, you have to cross the Dakota using the railroad bridge at Bard's Crossing; then pretty much just follow the tracks until Saint Denis. Avoid the water at Dewberry Creek and you're fine.

  • #7. Kill 7 enemies from horseback. These don't have to be consecutive, but if you get off your horse the counter resets. Also, they have to be enemies, so ride around until you find a traveler, insult them until they turn hostile, and then kill them.

  • #8. Kill 9 predators from horseback. Predators are alligators, bears, cougars, panthers, wolves, eagles, vultures, hawks, ravens, and a few more. Just ride around the bayou and kill nine alligators; can be done in three minutes.

SURVIVALIST

  • #5. Catch a fish in the bayou from a riverboat and from the train tracks. You can find boats or canoes along the Lannahechee, or use the one you can buy for the camp. There are two train tracks entering Saint Denis across the bayou: the northern ones from Emerald Ranch and the southern ones from Rhodes. For some reason, you must use the northern ones; the others never worked for me...

  • #6. Kill 5 scavenging animals. Crows, ravens, hawks, vultures, eagles, foxes, coyotes, boars, possums, raccoons, rats are among the most commons, but bears and wolves will occasionally scavenge too. Wait for them to begin eating the prey and then shoot them. The best tactic is to kill an animal and wait for the scavengers from a distance.

  • #8. Kill 8 small game consecutively with small-game arrows. You can't miss, nor hit nonlethal â€‹shots. Best place to do this is Emerald Ranch. The chicken pen has 9 poultry. Just use Dead Eye and only shoot when you've got a clear shot (i.e., no goats in the way).

  • #9. Catch a fish weighing at least 19 pounds. Channel Catfish in the Kamassa are perfect for this. Use the pier at Macomb's End.

MASTER HUNTER. Easier to complete during Chapter VI.

WEAPONS EXPERT. Easier to complete during Epilogue I.

SHARPSHOOTER. Easier to complete during Epilogue II.

DINOSAUR BONES DREAMCATCHERS,  ROCK CARVINGS

LEGENDARY ANIMALS

  • Boar. Bluewater Marsh. First clue is north of "A" in "Bluewater." Boar Tusk Talisman.

  • Bull Gator. Bayou Nwa. First clue is just east of "O" in "Bayou," outside Hagen Orchard. Alligator Tooth Talisman.

LEGENDARY FISH

  • Longnose Gar. Lagras Swamp. Stand on the shores of Lakay, near the half-submerged house where the Cat Skull Mask is. Wade in the swamp a little to have the best shot at catching this fish.

  • Lake Sturgeon. Lannahechee River. This fish is south of the railroad bridge that's south of Caliga Hall. Use a boat (there's usually one nearby, or buy one at camp) and stand on it to fish.

RANDOM ENCOUNTERS AND RECOMMENDED ACTIVITIES

Grays' Secret

  • A point of interest and related journal note that becomes available at the start of Chapter IV. On the front porch of the main building in Caliga Hall, just past the first guards by the main entrance. This is trespassing, so be quick.

Rhodes Bounty Missions

  • These unlock after the start of Chapter IV. The bounty posters are at the Rhodes station.

  • Mark Johnson. $25 reward.

    • If you let him say goodbye to his son, two henchmen will track you down and try to get him back.

    • Johnson can be seen being hanged in a random encounter in Rhodes later.

  • Camille De Millemont. $40 reward.

    • There's also $30 in cash at the camp.

  • Robbie Laidlaw. $35 reward.

    • Inside Old Harry Fen Shack is a photo of an enslaved family and the Slave Catcher Newspaper Scrap, a unique item. If you had looted it before, it simply won't appear in this mission.

Saint Denis Bounty Missions

  • The bounty posters are at the police station near Théâtre Râleur.

  • Lindsey Wofford. $100 reward.

    • In the shack's basement are the Civil War Knife on a crate, the Civil War Report in a chest, and the Civil War Hardee Hat in a corner. In the chest under the broken walkway leading to the southeast tower are $20 and the Special Horse Medicine Pamphlet. Finally, many of the Lemoyne Raiders wear the Miltary Forage Cap as usual.

Saint Denis Gunsmith Robbery

  • $20-30 in the cash register. $20-50 from the safe upstairs. Gold nugget on the desk to the right of the safe.

  • This can be done nonlethally and with zero bounty. Leave the horse on the side road, not in front of the shop. Knock out the gunsmith after he opens the security back door. Threaten and then hogtie the guard in the back. Upstairs, hogtie the guard by the door before he can attack. Threaten the card players until they open the safe. Hogtie them all. The alarm is raised either when you loot the safe or when you've looted all three players. Go back out the same door and exit from the balconies. Climb up on the roof until you get to your horse. If you were reasonably quick, the law is still searching.

Vampire Hunt

  • You must discover the five vampire clues, in any order, before confronting the creature:

    1. On the wall at the corner of the building, visible from the street, above the right leg of the "N" in "Denis."

    2. On the wall inside a small gated area to the right of the market with the Trapper, between "I" and "S" in "Denis."

    3. On the wall under the porch between the butcher shop and the general store, on the side of the railroad tracks.

    4. On the wall above a chair in an enclosed courtyard, behind the Fontana Theater and south of the gunsmith.

    5. On the wall under the arches in the same enclosed courtyard as before, but to the north, toward the "D" in "Denis."

  • After discovering all the clues, Arthur will trace a pentagram on his journal. Between 00:00 and 01:00 am, go to the center of it, in a back alley just across from the butcher shop. There will be an X marking a corpse. Kill the vampire while it's sucking blood or when he attacks you, and pick up the Ornate Dagger from him. (If you miss the dagger, it can be bought from a fence later).

Most Important Random Encounters

  • Attempted Murder. A man asks for help for his wife. Spawns by the abandoned train station outside of Caliga Hall, at the crossroads leading to Bolger Glade and Shady Belle. Go to the man's shack (Crawdad Willie's) and kill the assailants. The one with the knife will one-shot kill you if you let him get close. The woman will offer you a $50 reward. See here for more details.

  • Prisoners at Crawdad Willie's. Near the same shack as above you can find two escaped prisoners, one alive and one dead. Shoot the chain and the survivor will tell you the location of a gold bar in Rhodes: near three large boulders just across the railroad tracks from the water tower. See here for more details.

  • Arm Amputation. Spawns south of "T" in "Bluewater Marsh" or just east of "N" in "Lemoyne." Take the man to the Saint Denis doctor and witness a gruesome cutscene. Receive $15 from the man. Days later, you can see this man being hanged in Saint Denis.

  • Sonny's Cabin. Just south of "N" in "Bayou Nwa," a creepy dude sitting on his front porch invites you in. If you accept, you're knocked out and robbed. Then you can return to recover your money. There's also collectibles in this cabin; see the Collectibles section above.

  • "Doyle's Tavern" Rat Hunt. This is the rundown saloon in the slums. In the first stage, the owner will ask you to get rid of rats for him. There are 7 to kill. Use small game arrows and get 7 perfect rat pelts. In the second stage, do the same for 10+ more rats.

  • Nite Folk

    • Hanging Victims. A victim hanged to a tree may spawn at night in various locations across Bayou Nwa and Bluewater Marsh. Shoot it down to trigger an attack by three assailants. From the first two corpses you run across you can get the Nite Folk Victim's Note (first) and the Nite Folk Wagerer's Note (second).

    • Crying Woman. She may spawn in either Bayou Nwa or Bluewater Marsh, usually near the sites of the hanged victims. Offer to help her to trigger the encounter. She will stab you and almost kill you, then three more Nite Folk will emerge, any of whom can one-shot kill you if they get near.

    • Triggering any one Nite Folk encounter will start the A Fine Night for It mission; see the Strangers Mission section above.

CHAPTER 5: GUARMA

FULL WALKTHROUGH: STORY, STRANGERS, COLLECTIBLES

Two Random Encounters. These are missable if not done before Dutch's mission, and they're excellent sources of ammo, provisions, and even weapons: I found an intact repeater and a rolling block rifle on the guards. Also, follow the river downstream and get into shootouts at the village: there is no penalty for dying on Guarma, and you respawn at camp where all the goodies and ammo have also respawned.

  • Pitfall. Head far east from camp, to the very end of the path, and fall into a trap. Kill the two guards that appear and the 7-8 that come storming in.

  • Prisoner Pursuit. Start from the river and walk back to camp; it triggers about halfway up. Shoot the guards to rescue the prisoners.

Unique Animals. While these aren't needed for 100% completion, real completionists will want to fill out every item in the Compendium at the maximum level.

  • Four birds: red-footed booby, blue & yellow macaw, scarlet macaw, and great green macaw. These are found anywhere along the river, especially near the waterfall.

  • Four snakes: fer-de-lance snake, sunglow boa, rainbow boa, and red-tailed boa. Snakes only spawn reliably in one spot: next to the two logs that form an L-shape on the ground, just downhill and west from camp. Otherwise, walk around the woods to find them.

Welcome to the New World. Nothing.

Savagery Unleashed (Strangers Mission)

  • Do this before the Dutch mission. The guards in the church shootout are likely to drop a Sun Hat, the only unique item in Guarma.

A Kind and Benevolent Despot

  • The Sun Hat often drops from one of the guards during the final shootout near the river.

Hell Hath No Fury

  • Rolling Block Rifle is on top of the fort, on the right-hand wall. A Double-Barreled Shotgun is inside the fort on your way down.

  • One of the three guards coming up the stairs in the fort always wears a Sun Hat.

Paradise Mercifully Departed

  • Last chance for the Sun Hat, typically on one of the guards exiting the plantation or in the village where the captain is being held.

Dear Uncle Tacitus

  • Receive $450 at the start. There's a horse in Van Horn under the lamplight.

  • At Shady Belle, pick up the Letter from 'Caroline' on the table. The Pinkertons must be looted before they're all killed, or for some reason the corpses can no longer be interacted with. Their horses outside are more likely to have loot, such as gold nuggets.

  • When you ride from Van Horn to Shady Belle, if you set the second-fastest horse speed by tapping "A" twice at the start, then turn on Cinematic View and keep A pressed, the horse will arrive at Shady Belle exactly as the song ends!

  • Arthur can keep the Guarma outfit if you visit a general store and save it as a Custom Outfit before you reach Shady Belle.

Fleeting Joy

  • Restores all of Arthur's equipment pre-Guarma, plus the $450 and any loot you've collected since returning.

That's Murfree Country

  • Pick up a Machete from the first Murfreed lookouts. Whichever approach you choose (stealth or dynamite), you must loot all the bodies before you approach the cage with the prisoner, or they'll become unavailable.

  • The chest at the end of the cave, on the far left of the final chamber, has about $40 and two jewelry.

  • All bounty hunting must be finished before this mission, or it becomes unavailable until the Epilogue.
